Thomas Island
About Me
My name is Thomas Island. I was born in Baltimore, Maryland and moved to Virginia Beach when I was in the 6th grade. I graduated high school from Tallwood in Virginia Beach in 2017. Shortly after graduating I enrolled at Old Dominion University. At Old Dominion University I am currently pursing a a Bachelors of Science in Cybercrime with a minor in Cybersecurity.
At ODU I have had the pleasure to work in different departments. I have worked in the Student Transition and Family Program department as a Preview Counselor. As a Preview Counselor I had the opportunity to work with the Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Computer Science Advisers to help freshman and transfer students transition into ODU smoothly.
I have also had the opportunity to work for the Center of High Impact Practices as an ePortfolio assistant and Ropes Program Mentor. As an ePortfolio assistant I have had the opportunity to help students and faculty create websites using Wordpress and Wix. We also assist with Dropbox and Google Drive as well. I personally have been placed in a position to help cybersecurity students and conduct screencast and class visits to help them down the road. During my time as Ropes Program Mentor, I was granted the position to help incoming freshman find classes, navigate through campus, and answer any questions they may have as they embark their journey at ODU.
I have also worked for the College of Arts and Letters as an Cybersecurity Student Researcher. I worked hand and hand with faculty to come up with a local and small business security plan. This was done by using the FCC plan, researching different software and hardware, and finally conducting a poster and research paper.
I am currently working for Comsec LLC in Virginia Beach as an Computer Forensics Intern. As a computer forensics intern I have gained valuable knowledge with regards to Cellebrite, Blackbag, Susteen, and basic digital forensics skills. I have gained a lot of hands on experience working with 4pc and Physical Analyzer and different companies dongles.
With my potential departure from Old Dominion in May 2021, I still have a lot to accomplish and I am looking forward to helping other departments around ODU to help better students, faculty and myself in the long run.
